No Halves for the Tribute

The final of the Tribute South West Winter Foursomes annual competition was held at Yelverton Golf Club this week. A competition which started at the latter part of 2018 attracted 82 competitors from a dozen Devon & Cornwall clubs. The highest scoring teams from the first round qualify for the finals whilst others compete for the Plate. The first of the morning’s matches saw the talented Teignmouth pairing of Dave Best & Dave Henson against the Murray brothers from Yelverton. Simon & Anthony Murray are very good in matchplay situations and so their brilliant 5&4 win came as no surprise to local golfers. Superbly maintained course conditions and mild temperatures helped to produce another good semi-final for the second match which saw two Yelverton teams of Bryan Gullick & Andy Hill against Kev Blaber & Lee Lawson. This proved a closer match but Gullick & Hill ran out winners by 3&2.

While these matches were being played there was also the little matter of the ‘Plate’. With a large field, winning the stableford Plate is no mean feat. So after a full day of competition the team to claim top spot was that of Dave Bridges (Yelverton) & Martin Wallace (Staddon Heights). Playoff places for the SWW foursomes champions title were still to be decided and with the thought of more excellent golf to come the prospect was mouth-watering. Third and fourth places saw Dave Best & Dave Henson play Kev Blaber & Lee Lawson. A very close match but it was the Yelverton pairing of Blaber & Lawson who sealed third place by 1up. The final match was difficult to call as both Yelverton teams had the same local knowledge and both had very good results in the morning matches. It wasn’t long before Gullick & Hill got in to their stride however and with a birdie on the par 5 eighth hole they went 3up. Hill was back in action at the eleventh were his brilliant holed chip which took the pairing to 4up. You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that it seemed ‘all over bar the shouting’ but I did say that the Murray’s were very good at matchplay and so it proved. The shock waves could be felt in the clubhouse as first the brothers pulled one hole back on the twelfth, then another on thirteen, only to continue their good run of form by taking both fourteen & fifteen. The match was now all square going down the sixteenth and holes were running out fast. Another fairway found for Gullick on the sixteenth to put pressure back on to their opponents. The response was typical of this ‘nip & tuck’ match and it wasn’t until a putt just shaved the sixteenth hole by the Murray brother that saw Gullick & Hill retake the lead. The seventeenth hole gave the Murray brothers another chance to putt and the win but this ended being halved. Gullick & Hill were now dormy going down the eighteenth. The drive from Gullick again hit the short grass while the Murray’s drive hit bushes. Hill played conservatively with a lay-up shot to within a hundred yards of the pin. All that was left was to hit the green sink the two putts which they did and the match and championship was theirs. Gullick & Hill win 2up. All competitors spoke highly of the excellent spirit in which all the matches were conducted reflecting positively on all the players and organisers alike.
