Kings of the Castle

The final this year of the Parker Trophy was held on the 16 Sept 2018. This Devon County Inter-Club Scratch knockout competition has been running for 28 years since its instigation by Phil Parker. The venue was Bovey Castle golf course set in beautiful Devon rolling hills, meandering water hazards and slippery greens. Finals day differs slightly from the previous knockout match play rounds by having both foursome and single matches. So down to the teams and what a mouth watering prospect we had for this final. Last years winners Torquay were defending their title and were in no mood to let it go lightly. Their worthy opponents were Yelverton, another strong team with a good track record in this event.

Teams made up of size players started the day with the foursome format. The Torquay pairing of Lester Barnes & Steve Thorne proved a handful for Dan Rosevear & Matt Cooper and took the first match on the 17th hole. Things didn’t get any better for Yelverton in the second match which saw Peter Bicknell & Craig Passmore (Torquay) take on Des Carty & Alex Kippen. A close match going all the way and eventually being decided on the 18th in favour of Torquay. With only one match remaining from the morning session Torquay had now taken a 2-0 lead and even at this early stage looked on track to retain their title. The last match in the foursomes was between Nathan Gilpin & Scott Pym (Torquay) and the Yelverton pairing of Ryan Acres & Mark Harrington. As the first matches this lived up to it’s high standard and went all the way to the 18th. With a tee shot going awry Yelverton took full advantage and clinch the match and provided a glimmer of hope for the afternoon singles matches.

Going into the afternoon Torquay held a slender 2-1 lead. Lester Barnes and Dan Rosevear was the first singles match of the afternoon session and it was obvious for all to see the determination of the Yelverton side, as Dan didn’t look back for a 5-4 win. With the sides now level in overall points it was the turn of Steve Thorne and Alex Kippen. Alex has dovetailed in to the Yelverton team this year and went all out for a 3-2 win. Yelverton had now poked their nose in front but Pete Bicknell, looking to buck the trend, played some great golf against Matt (Yelverton). Another match that went all the way but this one wasn’t decided however until the 19th hole which Pete birdied and so the result went in Torquay’s favour. Matt’s last game as an amateur and good wishes go to him for his future as a professional.

Back to the match, it’s now all-square again! Match four of the singles and what an impressive one this was. Craig Passmore (Torquay) against Des Carty (Yelverton). At one stage Des was 5 up but writing Craig off wouldn’t be wise as he soon reduced the arrears to two. However Des played with maturity and went on to clinch the match 2-1. With two matches to go Yelverton held a slender lead. Nathan Gilpin (Torquay) played Mark Harrington and going down the 16th this match was too close to call. Mark pulled his tee shot to the edge of the trees and only had a half swing to punch a shot some 90 yards on to the green. A long putt from Nathan managed to halve the hole. Mark at this stage was one up and this was how it ended clinching the Yelverton victory.

All was not over though as Yelverton team captain Ryan Acres and Scott Pym (Torquay) battled it out. Standing on the 18th tee Scott held a slender lead after an earlier concession by Ryan. Scott’s drive managed to catch a down slope near the edge of the fairway and the ball shot off in to the under growth. With Ryan in the fairway bunker he played a lay up shot just short of the green. Scott’s provisional was pulled in to the trees and so he conceded the hole for a halved match. So it was Yelverton Golf Club who became this year’s winner of the Parker trophy in an excellent display of golf from both finalists.

Overall score: Yelverton 5.5 pts v Torquay 3.5 pts

On presenting the Parker Trophy to Yelverton team captain Ryan Acres, Richard Pascoe DevonGolf President, praised both sides for their ability, team spirit and for the example set by Devon golfers. He also thanked the competition officials led by referee David Smith and extended his thanks to Bovey Castle for hosting the event. Yelverton Vice-Captain, Bryan Gullick, hails the victory. “A terrific performance from every member of the Yelverton team. A much deserved win against a strong and talented Torquay squad. We now have a major trophy in our cabinet and a team to be proud of, we look forward to defending it next year”. Thank you to Bovey Castle for their hospitality and use of their challenging and beautiful golf course.

Saving Captain Ryan

This week saw the first of the semi-finals of the Parker Trophy, a county scratch foursomes matchplay competition. The venue was Teignmouth Golf Club and the views were breathtaking and only matched by the standard of golf on display by two extremely good teams from Exeter and Yelverton Golf Clubs. Yelverton’s first match fielded the unbeaten pairing of Dan Rosevear and Matt Cooper. Their opponents, wanting to stop their unbeaten run, stuck to their task and took the game on the 16th green. Yelverton’s Des Carty and Alex Kippen match was to follow. Racing out of the blocks they were five up at one stage. Steady play was to follow and they were victorious, levelling the overall team scores. Ryan Acres (Captain) and Mark Harrington were the last pair to compete for Yelverton. Again another highly competitive match but as the game progressed Yelverton began to pull away and they consolidated their win and a place in the Parker Trophy Finals on the 16 Sept 2018.
