Introduction To The Pounders

The Pounders grew from humble beginnings in the
early 1980s when a small group of friends who were all members of Yelverton Golf Club (YGC) met regularly on Tuesday mornings for a social but competitive round of golf.  At the end of each round £1 would be collected which would fund prizes for a Christmas Competition with an awards lunch and celebration afterwards. It was in those early days that the incumbent steward described them as the “pound-a-week-men” which instantly became the Pounders.

Almost forty years on the Pounders are still gracing
the fairways at YGC and the group has grown to approximately 50 members.  In recent times the Pounders have met at 7.30am on a Tuesday and Thursday as a Roll-Up group. Teams are formed from those present on any given day and a variety of competitions and game formats are played throughout the year. The large numbers require a formal structure and each year the Pounders appoint a Captain, Vice-Captain and Treasurer at its AGM. Between them they organise and run all Pounders activities on both the social and playing side.  Each
Pounders’ Captain will nominate a charity to support during his year at the helm.  An annual charity competition plus donations from the winnings of
generous individuals has raised money for many worthy causes.

The Implications of Covid-19 on the Pounders

YGC has introduced a tee booking system in order to comply with the post-lockdown Government social distancing rules and the golf club specific Covid-19 instructions set by England Golf.  Tee booking has meant that the option to operate as a large Roll-Up has become impractical.  It is almost impossible for individual Pounders to use the casual booking system to secure a sufficient number of adjacent tee slots to form the normal group of between 30 to 40 players.

As a consequence, a decision was taken to suspend all routine Tuesday and Thursday Pounders casual-play events.  A monthly Stableford competition is currently the only Pounders event taking place.  The duration of the tee booking requirement is uncertain but it is likely to continue for some time. This situation will be subject to review in light of any changes to the Covid-19 rules that appertain to golf and the tee
booking system at YGC.
