Gentleman Golfer Retires

How do you define dedication, commitment and loyalty? Well, for Yelverton Golf Club the answer is easy, it’s Mr Les Harries. At 78-year Les has decided to step down as Assistant Secretary and enjoy a well-earned retirement. Les is a real family man and retirement will afford him more time with them and also allow him to develop his golf.

Les, an ex Air Force man and assistant bank manager, moved to Plymouth in 1979 from Wiltshire. A sporting person he continued to pursue his passion for tennis and was an active member of both Carhullen and Plymstock Tennis Clubs. Les had considerable success at tennis and was both Devon County singles and veterans champion, also with his wife, won the county mixed title. One memorable LTA afternoon Les was in four finals all to be played consecutively and he still managed to win three of them. His introduction to golf came in the 1960’s and it wasn’t long after moving to Plymouth that he joined Yelverton. Club employment came in 2001 and when asked how things had changed over the last 17 years Les remarked, ‘Technology'. Years ago the secretary used to manually record competition cards which took all day, but when the computer system was introduced the players had to enter their own and they were not happy!’

Everyone at Yelverton Golf Club wish to extend their thanks to Les for all his efforts and hope he and his family enjoy longevity and happiness for their futures.
