About the Veterans' section of Yelverton Golf Club

(Veterans' Web Site feedback is encouraged, please e-mail any of your views to Tim Douglas-Riley at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

The Club has a very active group of Veteran or Senior Golfers known as Yelverton Vets; there are currently 102 in the group but there is always room for more. Come and join us if not already a member.

Membership of the Section is open to Yelverton Club Members that are at least 60 years old and that have an ‘Active’ handicap.

There is a comprehensive programme of Roll-Ups, competitions, friendly matches, social events and connections with other events such as the Emerton-Court Trophy (a keenly contested Devon inter-club knock out), entry to Devon Men’s Vets Golfing Association (DMVGA) and more. If you join us, you can be sure of plenty of extremely friendly and enjoyable golf – maybe more than your wife/partner would like! There are also some keen snooker players.

We meet every Wednesday morning in the Clubhouse Lounge for a ‘Roll-Up Draw’ which takes place at 0830; the 1st Tee is reserved for us from 08:45 until 11:00. The competition round may be a 4BBB, a Texas Scramble, a 3-Ball (1, 2 or 3 to count), or whatever the Vet’s Captain decides for that day. This is played using Vet’s Handicaps (for a full explanation of Club and Vets Handicap rules see Annexes A and B of the Constitution in the Committee section).

On the first Wednesday of the month (March through to October) an Individual Handicap Qualifying Round is played. This provides members them with an opportunity to maintain an ‘Active Handicap’ as required by the English Golf Union but away from the rigors of the more serious Club Medal Rounds.

The friendly ‘Representative Matches’, with a Home and Away leg, against other Vet’s/Senior’s Sections in Devon and Cornwall provides a wonderful opportunity to play a wide variety of courses for the cost of ameal and a few drinks whilst playing really enjoyable matchplay golf and making new friends. This programme normally begins in late March with a Home match against the Ladies, this is followed by another 34 ‘friendly’ matches against other clubs during the year. The programme ends in October with the return leg versus the Ladies. All Vets golf is played off Yellow Tees.

The Opposition:
Yelverton Ladies, Bigbury, Bowood, Churston, Dawlish Warren, Downes Crediton, East Devon (Budleigh), Exeter, Holsworthy, Launceston, Okehampton, Royal North Devon, Stover, Staddon Heights, Tavistock, Teignmouth, Torquay, Thurlestone, Wrangaton.

If you want to join us it could not be easier. Just turn up in the Clubhouse Lounge on a Wednesday morning before 08:30 and ask to be introduced to the Vet’s Captain, the Vet’s Secretary or anyone of the Vet’s Committee. There is a small annual membership subscription of £10 to cover administrative costs. You will be sure of a warm and friendly welcome.

Alternatively you can go to the Vet’s Committee page to see photos and contact telephone numbers of the current Committee.

The DMVGA are responsible for the Emerton-Court Trophy and also have sevearl competition days at a variety of Clubs. These are extremely popular as they are well organised, very enjoyable and attractively priced. Membership of the Devon Mens Veterans Golf Association (DMVGA) currently cots £3, if you wish to join.

If you are visiting the area and would like to join us in one of the Wednesday morning competitions just contact us; you are guaranteed a warm welcome. All you will need is an ‘Active’ handicap issued by your Home Golf Club; you will be required to pay the appropriate green fee but playing with a member may qualify for a discount.

We look forward to seeing you.
