The Pounders grew from humble beginnings in the early 1980s when a small group of friends who were all members of Yelverton Golf Club met regularly on Tuesday mornings for a social but competitive round of golf.  At the end of each round £1 would be collected which would fund prizes for a Christmas Competition with a prize giving lunch and celebration afterwards. It was in those early days that the incumbent steward described them as the “pound-a-week-men” which instantly became the Pounders.

poundersSome thirty plus years on the Pounders are still going strong and the group has grown to 65 members that, after the Veterans, makes it the second largest section within the golf club.  The increase in numbers has required a slightly more formal structure and each year the Pounders appoint a Captain, Vice-Captain and Treasurer at its AGM. Between them they organize and run all Pounders activities on both the social and playing side.

The Pounders now meet twice-weekly on a Tuesday and Thursday morning. Various competitions and different game formats are staged throughout the year (see Playing & Social Page). Those taking part are expected to be ready in all respects to commence play at 07:30, at which point teams are drawn for the competition that morning. There are few rules; Pounders are expected to respect and adhere to the following:

1. Turn up regularly

2. Remain in the clubhouse until after the presentation of the days prizes
3. Attend the Pounders AGM
4. Respect the decisions of the officials at all Pounders events
5. Respect fellow Pounders, members, officials and staff of Yelverton Golf Club

The Pounders are very proud of the support they afford Yelverton Golf Club. Frequently seen clearing the course of debris, particularly before major competitions, they have never turned down a request for help or support from the Club’s administration. During the past few years the Pounders have conducted many fund raising events, the most recent being in support of the Juniors and the new 9-hole course.  Each Pounders’ Captain will nominate a charity to support during his year at the helm.  An annual charity competition plus donations from the winnings of generous individuals has raised money for many worthy causes.

If you are a member of Yelverton Golf Club who is looking to play on a regular basis in a friendly but competitive environment and relish the banter associated with playing with like-minded affable people then the Pounders is for you. All you need to do is be on the first tee by 0730 on a Tuesday or Thursday morning and let yourself be known to any of those there.

We look forward to welcoming you to “The Pounders”
