Veterans' Matches

The friendly ‘Representative Matches’, with a Home and Away leg, against other Vet’s/Senior’s Sections in Devon and Cornwall provides a wonderful opportunity to play a wide variety of courses at very modest cost whilst making new friends. This programme normally begins in late March with a Home match against Stover GC; this is followed by another 33 ‘friendly’ matches against other clubs during the year. The programme ends in October with the Away match against Staddon.

The Opposition:  Yelverton Ladies, Bigbury, Bude, Churston, Dawlish Warren, Downes Crediton, Holsworthy, Launceston, Okehampton, St Mellion, Stover, Staddon Heights, Tavistock, Teignmouth, Torquay, Thurlestone, Wrangaton.

Section 14 from the Veteran’s Section - Competitions – Rules and Regulations is listed below for information.

14.    Veteran’s (Friendly) Team Matches

14.1    The Secretary will arrange a programme of matches against other local golf clubs on a Home and Away basis.  The Secretary will post a copy of the Programme of these matches on the Veteran’s section Noticeboard and maintain/amend this Programme whenever necessary.
14.2    Each of these Matches may comprise six or eight four-ball better-ball matches; the information will be shown on the posted Programme.
14.3    The Captain will post a notice inviting members of the Section to be considered for selection for the teams for each match.  Members should note that:

a.    Members volunteering for any match would normally be expected to play in the return leg.
b.    They should, if at all practicable, wear the Yelverton Veteran’s Team Colours.
c.    They will normally be expected to remain after their match and dine with their opponents.
d.    They will normally provide appropriate hospitality at Home matches.
e.    Visiting and home players will be responsible to pay for their own meals.
f.    Team members in Away matches often arrange to travel with their playing partners, they are normally expected to share the costs of this travel in some demonstrable way.

14.4    The Captain is responsible for the selection of the Team for each match.  The Captain will ensure that members have an equal opportunity to play in these matches; however, tradition requires that preference in the selection of the team for Away matches will normally be given to members who offer themselves and play in the Home Matches.  The Captain will post a Notice notifying members of the Team and Reserves.
14.5    Players and Reserves selected for matches are required to confirm their availability on the posted Team Selection Sheet and also personally inform the Team Captain if they have to withdraw.  It is then the responsibility of the person standing down to arrange a relief, drawing from the reserves list in named order. If there are no nominated reserves they must find another member of the section to play in their place. It is then the responsibility of the person standing to inform the Captain of the name of the relief player.
14.6    The Captain will be responsible for the appointment of Team Captain if this responsibility has to be devolved.
14.7    The Team Captain will be responsible for:

a.    Home Matches:

•    Confirming, for Home matches, the dinner arrangements and menu with the Catering Manager.
•    Welcoming the Captain and members of the visiting team.
•    The preparation of score/match cards for distribution to players.
•    Hosting the Captain and his playing partner at the post-match dinner and where appropriate any seating plan for the dinner.

b.    Away Matches:

•    Liaison with the Captain of opposing team and communicating any particular information to the Team
•    Further arrangements
•    All Matches
•    Maintaining a record of results of matches and posting a copy on the Noticeboard.

14.8    The Team Captain may further devolve one or more of these responsibilities to other members of the team should this be necessary
